On a cold winter night in 1863, when Archer Alexander overheard the area’s Confederate men plotting to destroy the nearby railroad bridge, he knew he had to do something about it. He ran five miles to the nearby Fort Peruque, where the Union soldiers were unaware of the impending danger! But it was not long before he was discovered, and using the Underground Railroad, he fled for his life, with sixteen other freedom seekers. They crossed the Missouri River at Howell’s Ferry Landing at 3 am on a moonless night when they were captured! This short YouTube video tells the story of Archer Alexander on the Underground Railroad.
