In 2019, family historian Keith Winstead reached out to author Dorris Keeven-Franke, a professional genealogist, asking for help in locating the grave of his ancestor Archer Alexander. When research disclosed that he is not buried at Centenary Cemetery in St. Louis, as had been last written in 1885; but at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ Cemetery on Lucas and Hunt in Normandy, they were very excited. The Cemetery donated a location for the friends and family of Archer Alexander to erect a suitable memorial, since the gravesite is not marked.
In 2023, the decision to erect such a memorial began in earnest, with the agreement that the Friends and Family would erect the memorial. Abraham Mohler would be chosen to sculpt the Memorial and the St. Louis Arts Chamber of Commerce would be the non-profit chosen to collect the funds for the exhibit. For the next two years, plans for the memorial were discussed and drawn up following many sessions where the descendants were invited to share their thoughts.
The Archer Alexander Memorial at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ is the burial site that is listed on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
The public’s support is critical for this memorial to happen. All donors contributing $25 or more to the Archer Alexander Memorial will receive updates, news and stories about the monument.
