Archer Alexander Memorial Foundation

The Archer Alexander Memorial Foundation has commissioned sculptor Abraham Mohler for a memorial in the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ Cemetery at 2101 Lucas and Hunt Road in Normandy [St. Louis County], Missouri. Archer Alexander’s burial site is documented as one of over 900 sites in our country on the NPS National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. In 2019, it was determined that Archer Alexander was buried in an unmarked grave in Common Lot 11, where hundreds of others are also buried. This cemetery contributed to the memorial by placing it at the front of the cemetery for this American hero.

Archer Alexander is the enslaved man still seen rising with President Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln Park in Washington, D.C. Born in Virginia in 1806, he was brought to the slave state of Missouri as a young man, with his wife Louisa. During the Civil War, he overheard and thwarted a Confederate plot and was forced to flee, but he took sixteen other men with him. He died in St. Louis in 1880 and was buried at St. Peter’s U.C.C. He is Muhammad Ali’s great-great-great-grandfather.
